Q?
Isn’t Lake Pontchartrain really rough?
-
A.
It can be, but it's unusual. Meteorologists divide winds into the 12 categories of the Beaufort Scale, but we like to think of it in just four categories: dead calm, riding the Ferris Wheel riding the roller coaster, and too rough to go out. The vast majority of days on Lake Pontchartrain are Ferris Wheel days. Roller Coaster days are lots of fun too, and we can adjust the sail plan so that we stay fairly flat and ride through the waves comfortably. If you choose one of the rare day that's just too rough, we're happy to refund or reschedule your trip.

Q?
What about days when it’s too calm?
-
A.
Let's go sailing anyway. As noon fades into afternoon, breezes often kick up over the water that aren't noticeable on land. We might have to hear the motor a little more than we would like, but a calm day on the water is much better than a calm day on the dockside bar, wishing you could be on the water.

Q?
What should we bring?
-
A.
The cockpit (where we usually sit) on Velvet Elvis is covered, but the most important accessory is your hat and sunscreen. If you want more food or drinks than have been arranged in advanced, there's plenty of room for your supplies or for a small ice chest. Outside of Summer months, bring something warmer to put on if it gets cool out on the lake. And, being Louisiana, a rain jacket is never a bad idea.

Q?
How old should my children be in order to come?
-
A.
It's a matter of your personal comfort. We have a lot of experience sailing with children as young as toddler age. We have several small life jackets, but to be sure that we have one that fits your child correctly, it's best if they bring their own.

Q?
I sometimes get seasick. Should I be worried?
-
A.
Usually, Velvet Elvis travels over the lake very calmly. But those prone to seasickness might want to take their favored medication, just to be sure. We can't speak for your friends, but the crew promises not to make fun of you if you do end up sick.
